What will a Stainless Prop do for me?
Pros:
-
Since stainless steel has increased strength of that of aluminum, stainless
will hold its geometry under load conditions resulting in increased
performance over aluminum.
-
Most all stainless steel propellers are manufactured with cup, resulting in
superior hole-shot performance as well as cavitation control.
-
Stainless is three times stronger than aluminum, resulting is less propeller
damage when mildly striking submerged debris, sandy bottoms or weedy/wood
strewn lakes.
-
Due to the high polished finish of stainless steel propellers, fish can be
attracted to the reflection of a spinning propeller since it could resemble
a fishing lure.
-
With its outstanding high performance feature, the stainless steel is
unmatched as the best value in a stainless steel prop.
-
They are more expensive than aluminum, but highly recommended for the
serious boater.
-
If you pull water skiers, you will want a propeller that has very limited
flex to it.
Cons:
-
Stainless Steel propellers can be 3 or 4 times the cost of aluminum.
-
Stainless steel propellers hold a higher repair cost.
-
If the cushioned inner hub of the propeller does not fail when striking a
submerged object or lake bottom, damage to the lower unit could occur.

-
Mercruiser, Yamaha, OMC and Volvo SX prop in aluminum are Michigan Vortex,
stainless props are Michigan Apollo, and both are replaceable hub type.
Volvo props are OEM unless otherwise stated.
-
3 Blade standard Diameter props are well suited to general runabout type
boats.
-
4 Blade props improve hole shot on heavier loads and are well suited to
towing in water sports.
-
Stainless steel props are more durable than aluminum and are a little more
efficient in operation.
-
All sizes are stated in inches i.e. 13 x 17 would be 13” Diameter x 17”
Pitch
-
3 blade propeller vs 4 blade aluminum propeller- 4 blade advantage = better
hole shot and increased stability. 4
blade disadvantage = Top end speed
